KH: Your boat sank? CR: Yeah, we hit this reef. Huge son of bitch. Ran the whole coast of Australia! KH: You mean the Great Barrier Reef? CR: You've heard of it, huh?
Advice: Directions from Bimini back to the U.S.
1 Head out of Bimini harbor.
2 Hang a right.
3 Aim for North America.

The wreck of the Gallant Lady on north Bimini. It's on shore so you can walk right up and get great pictures. A beautiful new Hatteras docked at the Big Game Club. The Chalks seaplane prepares to take off from the harbor in Bimini (one of the reasons you never anchor in the middle of Bimini harbor). Founded in 1919 by Ahthur "Pappy" Chalks, it's considered the world's oldest continuously flying airline. Sunset as seen from Radio beach Blackbeard scuba cruises coming against the color change as a strom approaches. Yes, the water really was lit up in neon colors. A sportfishermen attempts to outrun an approaching squall. The lighthouse at Great Isaac. There have been a number of shipwrecks and other strange happenings on the tiny island - two lighthouse keepers went missing in 1968. Locals consider the place haunted. The docks at Weech's Hotel and Marina. Owned and Managed by Hank Weech, aka, Governor of Turtle Rocks. The wreck of concrete ship Sapona. The ship has a long and colorful history going back to WWI. She now serves as a snorkeling and social "pit stop" for visiting boaters. One of the first things you see as you enter Bimini Harbor. Seems to me a fine place to spend eternity. The Rockwell mansion on Paradise Point - originally known as Casa Lyon. Built and paid for by the hubcap clip (see book for full story). There is nothing quite so nice as an older Hatteras - they just don't make 'em like they used to... Crossing the Gulf Stream in August we came upon this "tall ship". Note the glass calm seas - that happens quite a bit in the summer. Gun Cay lighthouse south of Bimini. The buildings are from an old DEA field station that was knocked out by Hurricane Hugo. Legendary guides Bonefish Ansil and Bonefish Sam, who recently passed away. They are fishing from one of Ansil's hand-built Bimini Bonefisher skiffs. Passenger riding shotgun, the normal method in Bimini. Marlin hanging from the docks of the newly renovated Bimini Big Game Resort & Marina. The Hemingway museum and Compleat Angler bar. Don't kid yourself, you WILL be here before you leave the island. Even a die-hard fisherman can appreciate a beautiful sailboat at anchor. This shot was taken by Honeymoon Harbor.

Did you know? Ernest Hemingway was a founding member of the IGFA and helped write many of its rules. He was Vice President of the organization until his death by suicide in Ketchum Idaho.
Did you know? Almost 100 fishing world records have been set in Bimini.
None were set by the author.
Factoid Bimini is home to about 1,700 Bahamians, known as Biminites. Most live in Alice Town or just north in Bailey Town / Porgy Bay.
Did you know? Ponce DeLeon visited Bimini while on his quest for the Fountain of Youth. But seeing that he's still very dead, draw your own conclusion as to whether he found it.
Island History For most of Bimini's history, children had to go away to Nassau or Freeport for schooling. There were no schools on the island.
Joke How many Bahamians does it take to clean a fish?
Six. One to clean it and 5 to stand around drinking beer.
As told to the author by a local as the two stood around drinking beer while watching a man clean fish.
Advice I'm fairly certain that no one has ever lain on their deathbed and wished they'd worked more and fished less. |
